Over 40 people gathered June 21-23, 2017 for 1957’s class reunion, celebrating 60 years since graduation. The party kicked off at the Embassy Suites in Arcadia where many of us were staying . The hotel proved to be well-suited to meeting and greeting our classmates with a large gathering area set aside for cocktails each afternoon and breakfast in the mornings.
Attendees arrived over the next two days from all over – some local but many driving or flying long distances to get there. Dorene Meisch Leatherwood traveled the farthest from Ohio, with John and Valerie Albi (Vaughn '56), and Susie Cummins Newell and Russ ('56) driving all the way from Oregon.
The organizing committee of Dick Croxall, Bill Eldredge, Marylee Grant Goyan, and Barbi Knopp Wesser planned several events so we would have plenty of time together. Friday was the races at Santa Anita where 20 of us sat in adjacent box seats and tried our luck. So nostalgic for most of us. The 10th race was named “The Arcadia High Class of 1957 60th Reunion." Several of us who stayed until the end were rewarded by having our picture taken with the winning horse in the winner’s circle.
On Saturday, Lee and Penny Grund opened up their beautiful oak-shaded back yard for a BYO picnic where we got more chances to reminisce, pore over yearbooks – some as far back as First Avenue! – and renew old friendships.
That evening, we all gathered for dinner on the patio of Matt Denny’s Alehouse, a short walk from our hotel, for a buffet dinner and more chatting and story-telling from our teen years.
As we said goodbye the next morning at the hotel’s breakfast, everyone agreed that it was a fantastic weekend and we vowed to do it again, sooner rather than later!
